An Overview of The Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University
The Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University was founded in 1881 and is located at Duihu Road, Cangshan District, Fuzhou. Its predecessors were three private missionary schools: Anglo-Chinese College, Hwa Nan Girls’ Middle School, and Doweuk Girls’ School. In 1951, these three schools were taken over by the People’s Government and merged into a new public school, which has been officially named as it is today since 1973. As one of the first key high schools in Fujian Province, the Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University was officially designated as a first-class high school of the province by the Provincial Education Commission in 1994. In accordance with the Fuzhou Municipal Education Commission’s decision to establish junior and senior high schools as independent entities, the school ceased junior high school enrollment in 1998. In September 2003, it was recognized as one of the first provincial model senior high schools by the Provincial Department of Education. The school has been successively granted the following national/provincial honors: “Top Ten School for Science and Technology Education Innovation in the National Youth Science and Technology Innovation Competition,” “Experimental School for Major Projects in Basic Science by the Ministry of Science and Technology”, “Soong Ching Ling Foundation Sci-Tech Invention Demonstration Base for Children”, “National Model School for Defense Education in Primary and Secondary Schools”, “National Advanced School for Moral Education”, “National Outstanding Unit for Arts Education”, “National Base for International Promotion of Chinese Language”, “Fujian Provincial Science Education Base”, “Model School for the New Curriculum Reform in Fujian Provincial Senior High Schools”, “Fujian Provincial Early Training Base for Air Force Pilots”. In 2020, it was honored as a “National Civilized Campus”. In 2022, the school resumed its junior high school program. In April 2022, it became the first school in Fujian Province to implement the Principal Responsibility System under the Leadership of School Party Committee.
Over its 140-year history, the Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University has educated and supplied tens of thousands of outstanding students and talented contributors to higher education institutions and all sectors of society. Among its senior alumni stand prominent figures including 17 academicians represented by Hou Debang and Chen Jingrun, along with preeminent economists such as Chen Daisun. The school also counts among its early graduates numerous revolutionary patriots epitomized by Wang Zhu (Member of the CPC Fujian Provincial Standing Committee & Director of the New Fourth Army Fuzhou Office) and Fang Erhao (First Secretary of the CPC Fuzhou Prefectural Committee). Today, generations of young and middle-aged alumni are emerging as pillars in various fields across the nation.
The school currently occupies a campus area of approximately 135 mu (89,955 ㎡) with a total floor space of 78,315 square meters. It is equipped with comprehensive teaching facilities and a strong faculty team. Currently, there are 300 staff members, including 9 professor-level senior teachers, 5 special-grade teachers, 132 senior teachers, 3 provincial teaching masters, 2 lead teachers of provincial famous teacher studios, 20 provincial subject leaders, 17 municipal subject leaders, and 29 municipal key teachers. Over 110 faculty members hold Master’s degrees. The current enrollment stands at over 4,200 students across junior and senior high school divisions.
Over its 144-year educational journey, the school has forged three defining traditions: the Revolutionary Legacy, Academic Excellence, and Holistic Development. Guided by the educational philosophy of “People-oriented Approach, Moral Education Primacy, All-round Development, and Pragmatic Innovation”, the school upholds its motto “Our World, Our Duty” and promotes the school spirit of “civilization, diligence, pragmatism, and innovation”. Adhering to the principle of “Five-Education Integration (Moral, Intellectual, Physical, Aesthetic and Labor Education) with Differentiated Instruction”, it has constructed a “Character Cultivation & Global-Mindedness” curriculum framework, forging a distinctive development path marked by high quality, specialized features, and diversified approaches. This legacy has culminated in outstanding achievements manifesting in comprehensive student development with exceptional educational outcomes, pioneering contributions to Fujian’s basic education. Since 1985, the school has won 16 medals in international academic competitions for secondary students, a record leading all provincial peer institutions. In recent years, pioneering the competition studio system, the school established specialized studios for five STEM disciplines (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science), formed a “Dream Team” of elite coaches, and developed the KEEP curriculum. Consequently, our students now dominate provincial and national qualifications in both STEM Olympiads and youth science innovation competitions, consistently topping Fujian’s advancement rankings.
The school maintains an unwavering commitment to aesthetic education, creating an elegant educational environment where arts education thrives. National accolades including the “Outstanding National Unit for Humanistic & Aesthetic Literacy Education”, “National Advanced Institution for School Arts Education”, and “National Heritage School of Chinese Traditional Arts” fully affirm our achievements in this domain. The school consistently implements the educational philosophy of “health first,” with various sports activities flourishing, cultivating collective spirit through athletics. The school has achieved numerous victories in provincial and municipal secondary school sports competitions. As a historically strong program in Fuzhou basketball (boys/girls) and girls’ volleyball, and a Fujian Provincial Football Demonstration School, our school has been designated both a “National Campus Football Model School” and “National Featured Basketball School”. These accomplishments establish aesthetic and physical education as distinguishing features of our educational model.
On the great journey of the new era, we, members of the Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University, will resolutely implement the Party’s educational policies, advancing through unremitting exploration and sustained endeavor. Inheriting past legacy while pioneering future development, we refuse to be led astray by empty dreams or vain fame. Guided by the school motto “Our world, Our duty”, we march forward boldly on the journey of chasing dreams. This steadfast progression will yield substantial new contributions to implementing the national strategies of rejuvenating China through science and education and strengthening the nation with talent.
